If you live in the United States, then chances are that you have pretty good access to clean drinking water. Chances are also pretty good that you take that access for granted. Unfortunately for many people, access to clean drinking water is far from a given. In China alone, 320 million people, or roughly the population of the United States, do not have access to clean drinking water.

This is in large part because of how polluted our water has become. In fact, every year, an estimated 14 billion pounds of garbage are dumped into the oceans. This has devastating effect wild life that depend on our oceans. For example, more than 1 million sea birds are killed every year due to water pollution. Unfortunately, there are many more victims of water pollution than just sea birds.

Fortunately, there are things that we can do. First and foremost, make sure you do not dump toxic chemicals into landfills. 30% of the fresh drinking water is underground. However, when we improperly dispose of toxic items, those chemicals can leach into the ground and eventually into that underground source of drinking water. Examples of items that can be toxic include motor oil, batteries, cell phones, computer equipment. If you have any doubt about whether an item is toxic, check online to be sure and to determine the proper method of disposal.

Another thing that you can do is to try and conserve water. On average Europeans use half of the water that typical a American uses daily. By being more cognizant of water usage you can help to cut down. You can also do things like using collected water from the shower to water plants.
